We as a people really have come a long way toward becoming more understanding and accepting of mental illness, but there’s still much more to be done.
Mental Illness has been one of the most controversial topics in society, and there has been many perceptions about it. Half of adults, if not all of them, have experienced a mental illness at some point in their lives, and the most common form of mental illness, depression, is one that seems to be pretty much common to even teenagers these days.
There is, unfortunately, stigma and discrimination in our societies when it comes to mental illness.
All of these negative views and beliefs when it comes to mental problems are like a chain reaction because stigma will lead to discrimination, discrimination will lead to the person suffering from depression, for example, being reluctant to seeking help or treatment, and that may lead to other issues like committing suicide or any other physical harm to thyself.
As a people what we need to do from this point is to break the stigma around mental illness.
What needs to be done to break this stigma would be to talk more about mental health. We need to make it normal and not have it shunned as if it is a disease of some sort. Raising awareness about it will surely make more people come out and “Hey me too!” .
Another way to try and support our fellow brothers and sisters in our societies would be to try and connect them with people that have experience of mental health problems because ‘just’ talking about it won’t necessarily change much.
On top of the negative perceptions that are already there and the stigma around mental illness, this situation is exacerbated by the media. Media reports always link mental illness with violence, or portray people with mental health problems as dangerous, criminals, evil, or very disabled and unable to live normal. This is far from the case.
One of the things that will surely help our society in one way or another when trying to ‘heal’ from mental illness would be to stay off the internet. Connect with people. Do not let the internet dictate the way you feel. Do not validate your happiness based on what people expect from you. If you choose to stay on the internet make sure that you filter your feed with positivity and motivation and doing that is close to impossible.
One more thing that can help people with mental health problems has been briefly mentioned above – seeking professional help. Seeing a therapist may help them in an unthinkable way. Seeing a doctor could also help them tremendously.
It’s okay not to be okay. Do not keep stuff inside you. Talk to someone. If you know someone who might be suffering from mental health issues you should check up on them.
